Everything you need to know about SEO in one place.
These days, it's not enough to simply increase website traffic.
Getting millions of visitors to your site does not necessarily translate into making millions of dollars.
If someone gets to your site and doesn't find what they are looking for, they'll be gone just as fast as they arrived.
In this day and age, people surfing the Internet have a much shorted attention span than they did even a few years ago.
You need to target the person's specific needs in order to have them stay around long enough to consider buying your product.
It's All In The Page's Content
When people search for something on the Internet, they usualy fit into two distinct groups.
- They don't know anything about the subject and don't know where to begin, OR
- They have a decent idea of what it is they are looking for.
People Who Are Just Collecting Information
In general, the first group of people will likely type fewer words into the search engine.
For instance, if you think you want to purchase a lamp but don't yet have an idea of what type, you would probably just Google "Lamps".
If you put yourself in their shoes, you would imagine what you would hope to find.
I personally would want to find a page that tells me about the various types of lamps available and see a few of them in a common setting.
If I reached a page that was trying to sell me a specific type of lamp, I may leave immediately because the page does not currently fit my needs.
People Who Know What They Want
The second group of people are probably trying to find something very specific.
They likely have done their research on the general topic or already knew about it.
Now they are trying to find something that specifically fits their needs.
In the case of the lamp example, they might type in a more targeted keyword phrase, commonly referred to as a long-tailed keyword phrase.
For instance, the person might Google "dragonfly tiffany table lamps".
Again, if you put yourself in their shoes you can imagine what it is that they would want to get to.
More than likely a page that is dedicated to this exact style of lamp and has a list of products that fit this description would get their attention.
Research The Keywords
The first thing you should always do is build a list of keywords.
Using keyword research software is one of the easiest ways to do this quickly and effectively.
Once you have built a list of keywords that are related to your sites topics, create pages that are dedicated to some of the keywords that fit into both groups.
In an ideal situation, you want to address the needs of group #1, and help them turn into group #2 all within your site.
Scenario #1: Here is a scenario that you want to achieve with someone from group #1
- John: Hi, I'm John, and I am interested in learning more about lamps.
- Your Site: Hi John, I'm a Lamp website... here is some information about different styles and shapes.
- John: Excellect, I really like the dragonly table lamp style.
- Your Site: Here is a list of dragonly table lamps that we offer.
- John: Sweet! I'll take that one over there!
Scenario #2: Here is a scenario that you want to achieve with someone from group #2
- Samantha: Hi, I'm Samantha and I am looking for a Tiffany Dragonfly Table Lamp for my living room.
- Your Site: Hi Samantha, we have a great selection of EXACTLY what you are looking for. Here is our collection of Tiffany Dragonfly Table Lamps.
- Samantha: Excellent! I'll take that one over there!
Now imagine switching things around and putting scenario #1 with Samantha.
Samantha is looking for something specific, and she gets a list of every lamp known to man.
She will likely just return to the search results and find a site that gives here exactly what she searched for.
The same thing happens if you put John through scenario #2.
He will likely say, I don't know if this is really what I want... I just want more information on all kinds of lamps.
Blam!!!!... back to the search results.
Conclusion
When you put together the pages on your site, always consider the audience that the page is for.
Pick out the keywords that these people would be using and add content to the page that fills their needs.
Pages that target general keywords should provide general information about the subject, with ways to dive into greater detail.
Pages that target specific keywords should provide very specific on-topic information about that subject and no other subject.
